When 13-year-old Hazel was surrendered to the shelter in June, she was severely overweight and struggling with multiple health issues. The clinic staff at Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA immediately fell in love with this easy-going girl and got straight to work getting her adoption-ready.

Charlotte-Albemarle SPCA uses funds from their Grey Muzzle Grant to provide critical veterinary care for senior dogs. They were able to remove Hazel's benign masses, find the right combination of medications for her hypothyroidism, and get her on a weight-loss plan. Hazel managed to lose 20 pounds in just a few months on her special diet!

Hazel continued to charm both volunteers and staff while she waited patiently for the perfect retirement home. She was the definition of a gentle giant: quiet, easy-going, and lovable. There’s nothing Hazel loved more than taking naps outside in their play parks. But she still knew how to have a good time, too. She attended numerous off-site adoption events and even jumped into the pool at the local Pup Pool-ooza!

After a Facebook post introducing Hazel to their supporters, the shelter had an outpouring of interest in this adorable gal. She quickly found a loving foster family, complete with two other senior pups to rest and relax with. After just three days in their home, the Neumanns decided to make Hazel a permanent addition through adoption!

We couldn’t be more thankful for the hard work and dedication of Charlotte-Albermarle SPCA. Their love and care allowed Hazel to find a forever home where she will happily live out her golden years. Thank you also to our fabulous supporters - your generosity allows these incredible organizations to continue their important work.
