Food Safety for Senior Dogs and Choking Tips

Senior dogs are part of the family and some of the beings we are most grateful to have in our lives. As we move through fall and into Thanksgiving, unique foods and spices may be added to our diets. Denise Fleck, The Pet Safety Crusader, shares which of these autumn favorites are safe for the whole family (including Fido) and which are potentially hazardous, meaning you could end up at the emergency vet if ingested.

In this webinar, you’ll learn about the nutritional value of various foods, especially vegetables, and how to best prepare them for your senior dog. Denise will answer questions like, “Can my dog eat peas?” (Yes!) and talk about why it’s fine to feed your pup canned pumpkin but important to avoid pumpkin pie mix. She’ll talk about why certain holiday foods are particularly dangerous for pets, including unbaked dough, raisins, currants, and nuts. As an added bonus, Denise shares a recipe for a batch of tasty Turkey* Veggie Muffins you and your pet can enjoy together.

Just like us, dogs sometimes gulp or take in too much when enjoying a favorite meal or treat. Or they may swallow something they shouldn't have! So how do you help a dog who is choking? Denise discusses signs of choking and demonstrates the important steps to help a choking pet, including the doggy Heimlich, chest thrusts, and the latest eXternal eXtraction technique (XXT).
