Almond
Almond is about 12 years old and was one of 200 evacuees from the terrible floods in South Carolina last fall. Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) staff and volunteers helped move cats and dogs from a county shelter to higher ground and Almond caught the eye of founder and president Denise Bitz.
“When I first met Almond, she broke my heart,” Denise said. “There was no light in her eyes. She seemed defeated, exhausted and not once did I see her wag her tail.”
Almond is very timid, and likely has spent her entire life outside, alone, on the end of a chain. To make matters worse, Almond had a host of health problems. When BWAR brought Almond back to their facility, the medical team diagnosed her with Cushing’s disease and heartworms. She also had advanced tumors the size of grapefruits on her mammary glands. The poor girl was in severe discomfort, obviously a victim of extreme neglect for many years. But thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization and the caring staff of BWAR, Almond was put on medicine for her Cushing’s diseases, her heartworms were treated and her tumors were found to be benign!
Now she’s living with a great foster mom getting the love and attention she deserves. She’s even wagging her tail these days and seems so thankful to be relieved of pain and to be part of a loving family. “Almond is perfect,” says her foster mom. “I’ve loved seeing her come out of her shell. The first two weeks she didn’t want to leave her bed. I called her a little princess because she would only eat in bed. Now, when it’s eating time she follows me into the kitchen and she positions herself next to my husband’s recliner for scratches every night. Her whole little being has changed.”
Thanks to Grey Muzzle supporters like you, Almond has come a long way in a short time. Her scratchiness is at a minimum and her hair is slowly growing back in patches. Her spirit is slowly re-emerging in small ways every day.
