Evelyn came to the Humane Society of Charlotte through one of our partnerships with local municipal shelters in North Carolina. Evelyn was transferred into our care on March 13, 2018. As procedure goes with all new dogs we bring in, we set Evelyn up in a dog play group with other dogs her size to test her dog skills. Evelyn enjoyed playing with the other dogs, and seems to us to have been socialized around dogs before.

Evelyn is a volunteer favorite! Our volunteers love taking her for walks in the park, she will find a grassy area under a tree to lay down in and settle in for some belly rubs. She has a very calm demeanor, and at 8 years old she finds more joy in finding a quiet, soft place to rest than romping in the play yard with the younger dogs. For that reason we feel she would be best placed with dogs who respect or match her energy level.

Like most dogs who come in as strays or spend a lot of time unattended outdoors, Evelyn is heartworm positive. The good news is Evelyn is already low energy so keeping her heart rate down during the treatment shouldn't be an issue. In addition to the heartworms, our animal care and medical team have noticed Evelyn has some stiffness in her joints, making her a little shaky when she first gets up to start moving around. Once her joints warm up a bit and she starts walking, we've noticed she seems more comfortable. Our medical staff have placed Evelyn on glucosamine supplements long term to ease the stiffness in her joints and to help make exercise more enjoyable for Evelyn. We also sent Evelyn for x-rays, which came back showing no major indications of arthritis or long term hip issues.

We hope the perfect adopter is willing to look past Evelyn's medical issues and appreciate her laid back presence. Evelyn would make a great pet for someone who wants a companion animal to cuddle and spend down time with.
