Bertha wound up in a Long Island municipal shelter as a stray. As an 11-year-old bully, she spent several months there before being pulled by Get a Bull, Inc., a two-time Grey Muzzle grantee.

After a full senior workup, it was determined that Bertha would become a part of Get a Bull's Forever Foster program. Her labwork showed signs of thyroid and kidney problems and she also had anemia. No one is quite sure the source of her anemia, but she's now on an iron supplement and will need bloodwork every six to eight weeks to monitor her levels.

Thanks to a Grey Muzzle grant, Bertha was able to get specialized veterinary care, including an ultrasound, to rule out any other life-threatening diseases, such as babesiosis and Addisons. Over time, her kidney and thyroid levels have normalized somewhat.

While Bertha may have a few health huddles to overcome, she doesn't let it get her down. Bertha loves every person and animal she meets and loves to lay around with her canine foster siblings. Her foster dad takes great care of her and she's happy and safe.
