Bear Burrito

     Bear Burrito came to Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) in April of 2021 as part of the Friends of County Animal Shelters transport program. Through this program, RCHS accepts transferred animals from overcrowded shelters where they may not get a second chance. 

     The little chihuahua’s owner had passed away and there was no one to care for him. This was a scary experience for the shy 8-year old. While at RCHS, Bear Burrito would eventually warm up to staff and be friendly and playful. He especially liked sunning himself in the yard. 

     Nearly four months went by and Bear Burrito continued to be passed over for younger dogs. Thanks to a Grey Muzzle grant, RCHS had the unique opportunity to place a half-page ad in Ranch & Coast Magazine, with an estimated 166,000 readers per month. [The grant has the special purpose of adoption promotion for often overlooked senior dogs, just like Bear Burrito.] 

     It worked! About a week after the ad was released in the August issue, a senior couple took notice. The potential adopters stated that they found themselves very lonely since their son recently moved out of state with his 10-year-old chihuahua, who they watched frequently and were very attached to. They saw Bear Burrito and felt like he was destined to be part of their family.

     Now called Bear, or ‘Honey Bear’, when he’s being extra sweet, this senior guy spends his days sunbathing with his dad who’s home all day!
