$10,000 Award From Boehringer Ingelheim Will Give At-Risk Senior Dogs A Chance To Learn New Tricks

INDIANAPOLIS — The national nonprofit Grey Muzzle Organization has received a $10,000 award to benefit senior dogs from Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) today, as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the U.S. launch of the company’s congestive heart failure medication for dogs. Grey Muzzle received the donation at the American Veterinary Medical Association’s annual convention in Indianapolis today.

Michael Hamby, head of the BI U.S. Pet Veterinary Business, presented the $10,000 award to Lisa Lunghofer, Ph.D. executive director of The Grey Muzzle Organization, on behalf of BI and Dr. Steven Wolchinsky, who has received the company’s first-ever Cardiology Pioneer Award, in recognition of all the veterinarians and specialists who care for dogs with congestive heart failure.

Buddy, a senior dog from the Humane Society of Indianapolis, which receives a grant for senior dog care from Grey Muzzle, was in attendance at the AVMA convention today as the $10,000 check was presented. The gift will provide senior dogs with critically-needed medical and dental care, adoption promotions, hospice care and other services that support The Grey Muzzle Organization’s “vision of a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid.”

“About 10 percent of all dogs have heart disease and the percentage dramatically increases with age,” Hamby said. “BI is pleased to make this donation to The Grey Muzzle Organization to support their outstanding work to help senior dogs in need and to recognize Dr. Wolchinsky and all the dedicated veterinarians who care for them.”

“We are delighted to accept this generous donation from BI and Dr. Wolchinsky,” says Lunghofer. “Congestive heart failure is one of the many health issues senior dogs begin to face as they age, and we are grateful to share the stage with others working to provide longer, better lives for them.”
