Beds For Senior Dogs

The Grey Muzzle Organization maintains a fund to provide orthopedic beds and cots to old dogs who are living in shelters, rescues, or sanctuaries. Beds purchased through this fund go to the organizations we have approved for funding or to a general bed fund, by your choice. Old dog on a donated bed

The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County received a donation of beds from Grey Muzzle. Here is what they had to say:

"We just received the soft beds, and the dogs LOVE them.  Especially the old Rottweiler.  It took him a whole minute to raise himself off his blankets and make a beeline for the new bed.  I could almost hear the sigh he let out."

In 2009, we were able to make old dogs more comfortable at 12 additional shelters, with your help.

The bed fund is made possible through your donations. And because you are donating to the fund rather than purchasing the bed yourself, your donation is tax deductible.

If you donate to the general bed fund, your donation helps to expand this program to more shelters. Cement floors in shelters are particularly uncomfortable for older dogs. Orthopedic beds can help old dogs get adopted. Old dogs lying on cement floors or even just blankets on a hard floor may limp when they get up to greet people, which can make them less appealing to a potential adopter.

We are grateful for your support, and for all you do for those most vulnerable of homeless animals - the elderly, trusting dog with so much to offer. The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is never without at least five or six senior dogs in the shelter, often as many as ten or twelve. Keeping them as comfortable as possible not only helps them physically, but adds to their emotional well-being, which I believe helps attract adopters. The immediate goal of these beds is to relieve pain and provide comfort, but the ultimate goal is to find these dogs loving homes.

Update: March 2009

Because of your generous donations during the holiday season, Grey Muzzle was able to donate over 25 beds to 12 organizations around the country, most of them shelters where old dogs were sleeping on cement floors. Click here to open a PDF document with a selection of some of the grateful senior dogs.

Donate a bed

Donate a bed to the general bed fund below. Donations to the general fund will go to purchase beds for organizations most in need, and increase bed donations to more organizations. If you prefer to donate specifically to one of the organizations we have approved for funding, choose an organization here.

Grey Muzzle receives manufacturer discounts on all beds. Whenever possible, we save money by buying in volume or during sales. The donation amount shown for each bed fully covers shipping as well as all of the accessories shown below.

There are two bed choices with several sizes each. Both have proven to be durable, comfortable, and therapeutic for seniors.

1. Deluxe orthopedic foam bed with a washable cover and waterproof liner.  Old dog on a donated bed
2. Kuranda bed with extra heavy vinyl cover recommended for shelters. Includes a washable fleece topper for extra "cuddliness" and a Grey Muzzle monogram to target the bed for senior dogs. kuranda bed
